An important component of Chinese cuisine and culture, the use of alcohol can be traced back to the dawn of the nation's history. Over the
centuries many different kinds of alcoholic drinks have been developed and brewing methods as well as distillation has become more sophisticated. At the same
time the way of consuming these desirable products has become a vital part of custom and culture.
First time Westerners to China are occasionally shocked by some of the public displays mentioned hereunder, but then some of the customs taken for
granted in the West are considered offensive to Chinese; public nudity, open discussion of matters pertaining to sex, etc.
Chinese do not usually accept a gift, invitation or favor when it is first presented. Politely refusing two or three times is thought to reflect modesty and humility. Accepting something in haste makes a person
look aggressive and greedy, as does opening it in front of the giver.
