Chinese business networks are sustained by Chinese cultural values and tradition; qinqi, guanxi and guanxiwang. Without one
of these cultural values networks will invariably collapse. Trust, reciprocation, face, etc. |

When I think of cultural differences, the most important thing that
comes to mind is the Chinese concept of "Face". In the PRC, face has to do with the image or credibility of the person you are dealing with.
You should never, insult, embarrass, shame, yell at or otherwise demean a person. If you do, they will lose "Face". In ancient times, a Chinese warrior chief,
after losing a battle, may commit suicide because he has lost face. |

Face From A Western Perspective |

Much has been written about the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. One perspective put forth by a leading researcher on face theories, Stella
Ting-Toomey, is that the negotiation came down to how both sides could retreat to more peaceful positions without losing face, or causing loss of face for each other. |

Making the Chinese Face |

When I was little, it was not uncommon for kids to make the "Chinese
face." By this I mean they would pull back the skin on the sides of their faces, stretching their eyelids back, and say, "look at me! I'm Chinese!"
That was a long time ago. At that time, "Chinese" still meant "Asian" to us. |

Guanxi is a word that the West needs to learn and understand.
We euphemistically call it "pay back" or "You scratch my back and I will scratch yours!"; in China it has real and lasting meaning
that can extend across whole families and generations. We speak of "faith and trust" but really only mouth the words, if it is not supported by a "water
tight" contract we do feel an obligation to honour our word, albeit given in "good faith". |

"To the foreign observer it looks so easy. They have read the books by studying the fly-leaf and conjecturize the ending from the
introduction. They have no idea of the contents, but because they once read a book by the same author, believe they do." Do so at your own peril. |
