After two decades of fighting a bloody civil war, Chinese Communists, led by People's Republic of China (PRC) founder Mao ZeDong, capture the final pieces of mainland China, and drive Chiang Kai-shek and his Nationalist forces onto Taiwan.
Mao stresses the importance of eventual unification with Taiwan under a principle of "one China," which will be foundation for the Chinese government's policy on Taiwan for the next 50 years.

What to bring for a trip to Tibet     Tibet is cold in winter, cool in summer and generally dry, receiving only 450 millimetres of rain or snow. The most pleasant months for tourism are from April to October. Clothing should be simple and consist of layers that can be added or removed as the temperature varies during the day. A warm windbreaker and "stout" comfortable shoes are especially recommended.

Tibetan cultural heritage suffered greatly during the Cultural Revolution. Many traditional festivals, once important highlights of the Tibetan year, are only now starting revive. Tibetan festivals are held according to the Tibetan lunar calendar. The Tibetan lunar calendar usually lags at least a month behind our Gregorian calendar.
